On December 11 2023, the formal request for the expansion of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park was made by the Community of Madrid.
In October 2023, the Término del Paular farm in the municipality of Rascafría was acquired by the Community of Madrid. The motivation behind this purchase was its proximity to the national park and the natural values it possesses. The acquisition aims to diversify the representation of natural systems in the park and on the network.
With the inclusion of the Término de Paular property, other lands adjacent to the park, namely public utility mountains No. 140 and 141 (Perimeter de Aguirre) in the municipalities of Miraflores de la Sierra and Soto del Real, and No. 131 (Perimeter of Lozoya), have been requested for inclusion by the Community of Madrid. These mountains, owned by the Community of Madrid, are partially included in the national park. Full inclusion is sought due to similar or greater natural values in the excluded areas, enhancing the definition of the park’s limits.
Finally, the Autonomous Organization of National Parks has been asked to include the entire Cabeza de Hierro mountain, the heart of the national park, which wasn’t incorporated earlier due to private ownership objections. Now state-owned, it is proposed to consider its full inclusion in the park.
The expansion proposal contributes 3,048.17 hectares to the national park, representing an 8.97% increase in the total area of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and a 14.04% increase in the park’s surface in the Community of Madrid.
